Both female and male circumcision involve the removal of various amounts of genital tissue. In females, there are at least four different types of circumcision, and in males, varying amounts of the prepuce are removed, depending on the incision. There are many different circumstances under which circumcisions are performed. This argument is only concerned with a specific set of conditions:
a) When the subject of the procedure is not involved in the decision to circumcise.
AND
b) When the procedure is not medically necessary.
The vast majority of circumcisions done in the North American continent fall into this category, and can be described as routine neonatal non-therapeutic circumcision.

The male prepuce is a richly innervated and complex structure, which serves multiple sexual and immunological functions. Although anaesthetic technologies can mitigate the pain of circumcision, it still remains a fundamentally painful procedure. See this video of a circumcision that presumably took place without anaesthesia (as it has for thousands of years before newer technologies were developed).

Circumcision has very real risks, ranging from mild to severe. There is not a single medical institution on this planet that recommends routine circumcision for medical reasons, although there may indeed be cases where circumcision is necessary. Circumcision historically functioned as a means of curbing male sexuality. This quote by Maimonides is quite telling, as are some of the quotes on this page. This is a lucid and engaging account of the modern history of circumcision's introduction to the West, which illustrates the way in which circumcision was used as a means to prevent masturbation.

We tend to find female circumcision abhorrent since it goes against the will of many girls (although many young women desire it to be done); it is painful; it is a form of sexual destruction; and we have no place imposing our aesthetic standards onto other people's bodies.

We should similarly frown upon male circumcision since it is fundamentally no different from female circumcision in that it involves the nonconsensual, painful, irreversible removal of genital tissue. Both have their origins in superstition, prejudice, fear, and ignorance and are expressions of this species' obsession with mutilating itself.
